This was fascinating!!! I learned SO MUCH about art and art history。 It was quick and engaging and covered so much information。 I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in art (and even those who don’t know they do yet。。。) middle school and up。 It says it’s for children, but it’s for ALL。 ❤️

This book is great for older readers not only because it is more a more challenging reading level, but the concepts of art are more in depth than one would typically see in a children's picture book。 This book takes famous pictures and goes in depth explaining the artist and the painting details。 This book talks about topics like shadows and lighting which are concepts older readers would understand better。 The photos chosen for this book are all great ones and are relatively well known。 It is v This book is great for older readers not only because it is more a more challenging reading level, but the concepts of art are more in depth than one would typically see in a children's picture book。 This book takes famous pictures and goes in depth explaining the artist and the painting details。 This book talks about topics like shadows and lighting which are concepts older readers would understand better。 The photos chosen for this book are all great ones and are relatively well known。 It is very well organized and I think older children who may have an interest or are developing a passion for art would very much so enjoy this book and the pictures included。 。。。more

。。。more

Don’t let the “for children” put you off。 It’s for all ages - a smart overview of pictures from cave walls to computer screens。 The authors (one of whom is a favorite: David Hockney) pitch some big questions I’m having fun pondering。

。。。more

Fun overview of theories and practices of art throughout history。 Does influence or method devalue an artist’s interpretation of the world? David Hockney is fascinating in his easily approachable experiments of technique in all media。And the illustrations are so well done!

An engaging introduction to looking at pictures, illustrated with a range of artists, all from Europe and North America, unfortunately。 Beautiful and inspiring nevertheless。

The setup is interesting, but it is SO white and male that it's distracting。 (Even all the little people in the doodles are white。) Also, I get Hockney is one of the authors, but he features so much of his own art it's like he's blowing his own horn through art history。So interesting way of presenting art, but disingenuous in its presentation of artists。 People of all colors make art, women make art, and have done for a very long time。 I keep thinking of the Guerrilla Girls pointing out that the The setup is interesting, but it is SO white and male that it's distracting。 (Even all the little people in the doodles are white。) Also, I get Hockney is one of the authors, but he features so much of his own art it's like he's blowing his own horn through art history。So interesting way of presenting art, but disingenuous in its presentation of artists。 People of all colors make art, women make art, and have done for a very long time。 I keep thinking of the Guerrilla Girls pointing out that the majority of the portraits in the Met are of women (and 3/4 nudes), but less than 4% of the entire collection is by women。 。。。more

Interesting--good for middle school and adults。 Mostly focuses on Western art and men--more diversity would have been nice。 Hockney includes an awful lot of his own work, especially considering that this is an art history book not a biography。

David Hockney and Martin Gayford are friends and they talk about art a lot。 Hockney is an artist, Gayford is a critic and author。 Together they have a lot to say about the history of pictures - from cave drawings to ipads, they discuss the elements of art that helped create and establish what we see today。 Using classic pictures, they explain the elements that were groundbreaking and compare with something modern (sometimes Hockney's work) or familiar (like Disney animation)。 They discuss light David Hockney and Martin Gayford are friends and they talk about art a lot。 Hockney is an artist, Gayford is a critic and author。 Together they have a lot to say about the history of pictures - from cave drawings to ipads, they discuss the elements of art that helped create and establish what we see today。 Using classic pictures, they explain the elements that were groundbreaking and compare with something modern (sometimes Hockney's work) or familiar (like Disney animation)。 They discuss light and shadow, use of space, mirrors, photography, moving pictures and much more。 A fun coffee table book, the art selected is beautiful and the text is written for upper elementary/middle school so the whole family can enjoy this wonderful art history book。 Includes a timeline of art inventions, a glossary, works cited, a bibliography and a full list of the illustrations used。 A must have in the art classroom。For this and more reviews, visit http://kissthebook。blogspot。com 。 CHECK IT OUT! 。。。more

This is a wonderful book by the painter, David Hockney, coauthored with the art critic, Martin Gayford。 It’s a children’s book, and I found it at the library while looking for books with my 5yo son。 It actually makes for a great read for the adults among us。 It’s short enough to read in a single sitting, and it’s a delightful book full of interesting insights and, naturally, observations。
